Rasgullas, Mishti doi and a lot of famous sweets belong to Kolkata formerly known as Calcutta, located in West Bengal. This day was the best day of my terrific summer vacation. As we embarked on our trip at midnight, I was eagerly anticipating what we were going to do there. when we reach there. As soon as the plane took off, I was in deep slumber. I woke up 15 minutes before the plane started descending. As the plane landed, I could see the winding roads and the lofty mountains and the trees swaying in the bracing breeze. When the plane was parked at the gate, I jumped with joy, with a spring in my step and left the plane.
We collected our overweight luggage while my father called for a cab. We walked to the gate and put our suitcases in the dickey. It was a wondrous drive to the hotel.
We reached the luxurious hotel and went to our room. As we were ravenously hungry, we ordered some lip smacking, delectable breakfast. After eating a heavy meal,we felt sluggish and went to sleep for a while. When we woke up, we took a bath and got ready. We hired a car that took us everywhere. Since I love cars, I was awestruck by every taxi as they were all yellow vintage ambassadors that were adorable from the outside but grimy inside, with tattered and worn-out seats.
First on our itinerary was The Indian Museum In Calcutta. It is said to be an archaic and gargantua museum and the ninth largest in India. As the sun glimmered, it was scorching hot and beads of perspiration started dripping down our face, but we continued exploring . Beautiful ornaments, picturesque Mughal paintings, skeletons and multifarious fossils were displayed.
As we proceeded to the next destination, I spotted a few trams. We visited the Victoria Memorial. It was made in the memory of queen Victoria. She was the great great grandmother of queen Elizabeth II. It was a dome structure adorned with carvings etched on the white marble. It was breathtaking. The moment I stepped out of the memorial, I was curious to know the people whose statues are on display in the museum. My father said that these are Romans. You can recognise them with the laurel on their head made of leaves and shrubs. It also signifies the sign of triumph. It was splendid.
Next on the itinerary was a lovely Cathedral Church, 185 years old. It was made of stained glass. It was divided in two parts one side for men and another for women. There was a small kneeling board to pray. I felt rejuvenated in the serene ambience. On the way to the Mogambo restaurant,we crossed the Howrah bridge. It is a balanced steel bridge on the Hooghly river. There is also another Rabindra Setu bridge which is named after the poet Rabindranath Tagore. I was flabbergasted to know that it is made of rivets and no nuts and bolts.
When we reached the restaurant, we ate some exquisite food. By the time we left, it was evening. We dashed to a famous Mithai shop”K.C.Das”and wolfed down some sweets. While we were eating, my mother told me that the first metro in India started in Calcutta. We left the shop and went to a temple. It is said that people worship and pray to Goddess Durga. We went for Pooja and prayed for good health. On the way out, we saw men wearing dhoti kurta and women wearing beautiful conch red bangles and clad in red Bengali sarees.
On the way back to the hotel, we stopped for some piping hot tea. As we drove back, I observed the surroundings and smiled ear to ear. “I finished a lot in one day,” I sighed. We reached back to the hotel and plonked ourselves on the bed. I will cherish these memories I yelled!
